With Spike Jonze directing and Dave Eggers assisting on the script this movie had all the makings of a legend. I don't believe the end product reflects my initial high hopes, but it is still quite good. James Gandolfini, Paul Dano, Catherine O'Hara, Forest Whittaker, Michael Berry Jr (I've never heard of him either) and Lauren Ambrose provide the 'Wild Things' with voices and create rich and complicated characters. I enjoyed my 2 hours and definitely feel that there was underlying meaning and implications that I missed on the first viewing. Therefore, by definition, it received a YesNoSoso 2.

The Golden Compass (2007)

This marks one of the few times in my life that I have actually stopped a movie before it was over. If I start a movie I generally stick it out til the end, but this movie was so bad, and I've heard from so many people that the books are incredible that I turned it off about thirty minutes in to save myself for the books. So unless the movie totally redeems itself in the final 1.5 hours, it simply sucks. Perhaps if you had read the books you would find some entertainment value at seeing it on the big screen. But I doubt it.

Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (1990)

Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Bringing out the Dead)

First off, both of those movies listed next to Kurosawa above are awesome so don't email me with wildly misplaced disgust and wrath. This is literally the only movie my Kurosawa that I've seen that I didn't like. Considered one of the best director's ever, Akira's movies have been remade into forms you are VERY familiar with. Next time you see George Lucas, ask him where the plot to Star Wars originated. But this movie sucks. Horribly. Pretentious art shots with English dialogue awkwardly written by Kurosawa. The only redeeming moment is watching Martin Scorsese (who considers Kurosawa one of his hero's) playing Vincient Van Gogh. Why Scorsese chose to read Kurosawa's dialogue without rewriting it in discernable English is one of life's great mysteries.

I love Terry Gilliam. Seriously, I want to take him behind the middle school and get him pregnant. He's made two of my all time favorite movies (12 Monkeys and Brazil), was a member of Monty Python and is one of the few truly experimental directors in main stream film. Unfortunatley, with experimentation comes occasional failure and Brothers Grimm is one of those failures. I still found it enjoyable, especially Gilliam's dark take on classic Grimm fairy tales, but as a whole it just misses. The execution just seems kind of haphazard and the story fractured. Oh, and Monica Bellucci is a goddess.
