Capturing the Friedmans (2003)

Director: Andrew Jarecki (his first movie, he co-founded Moviefone)
Stars: Arnold Friedman (a real person, its a documentary)
YesNoSoso: 2

Much in the style of Soupcons, Capturing the Friedmans is a documentary about a court case in which the details of a heinous crime are never really very clear. Jarecki wanted to make a documentary about David Friedman, the most sought after party clown in New York City, but instead found the court case revolving around David's father and brother, Arnold and Jesse respectively, the more interesting subject. The ups and downs, twists and turns of Capturing the Friedmans are so good and so profound that I would be remiss to include even the slightest hint to its subject matter. Just go see it and prepare for a wild, though admittedly depressing, ride.

Oldboy (2003)

Director: Chan-Wook Park (first movie I've seen by him)
Stars: Min-sik Choi (some Korean shit)
Je-tae Yu (some other Korean shit)
YesNoSoso: 2

Incredible. Seriously get off your fat ass and rent this movie now. I think its fair to say that part of my excitement about this movie is that it is a diamond in the rough and Speilberg and Will Smith are rumored to be planning a remake. Apparently when it previewed @ Cannes, Tarantino was the head judge and wanted to give it the Palm D'or, but the other judges couldln't be swayed away from Farenheit 9/11. Not really sure where I was going with that, but fuck you if it wasn't an amusing enough anecdote.

House of Sand and Fog (2003)

Director: Vadim Perelman (first full feature film)
Stars: Jennifer Connelly (Requiem for a Dream, The Rocketeer)
Ben Kingsley (Schindler's List, The Love Guru)
YesNoSoso: 2

I didn't quite realize how good both of these actors were until I looked up there resume's. It was really difficult to find a truely bad movie they were each in and even more difficult to pick just one great one. Their performances in this tragedy is no exception. Original story, poignant direction and a great ending.
